Assay of Calcium Formate Content
1. Method Summary
In a weakly alkaline calcium formate solution, an excess amount of potassium permanganate standard solution is added. After heating to ensure complete oxidation, the remaining potassium permanganate liberates iodine from potassium iodide in an acidic medium. The liberated iodine is then titrated with a sodium thiosulfate standard solution.
2. Assay Procedure
Sample Preparation:
Weigh approximately 0.4 g of the sample (accurate to 0.0002 g) and dissolve it in a 250 mL volumetric flask.
Dilute to the mark with water and mix well.
Oxidation Reaction:
Pipette 25.00 mL (or 10 mL) of the solution into an iodine flask.
Add 0.2 g of anhydrous sodium carbonate and mix.
Precisely add 50.00 mL (or 20 mL) of potassium permanganate standard solution.
Heat in a water bath for 30 min, then cool.
Iodine Liberation & Titration:
Add 6 mL of sulfuric acid solution and 2 g of potassium iodide.
Store in the dark for 5 min.
Titrate with sodium thiosulfate standard solution.
Near the endpoint, add 3 mL of starch indicator (0.5%).
Continue titration until the blue color disappears.
Blank Test:
Perform a blank test under the same conditions for correction.
